The brief is not the client

“It's a rare designer who doesn' want to please his or her clients, and designers like working to briefs. In fact, to be a graphic designer, you need a brief (even if it's a self-authored one), and if you don't need a brief then you are not a graphic designer. Good designers listen, ask questions, do research and take methaphorical thermometer readings on the task in front of them. But, they want to execute the brief in the way they think best.
